It's the time of the year in lower mountain ranges of Western North Carolina when the long leaf season finally gives its last dropping the remaining vestiges of trees ready for hibernation during the short winter season. Mill Spring is located in an isothermal belt which provides for a milder climate in the cool months than the higher elevations around us.
With humidity gone the pleasantly warm days and cool nights make for comfortable hikes around Hickory Nut Gorge and points northward. Views open up to expose the bold rock faces around Lake Lure. Mornings can cast a pink glow over the hilly ranges setting them warmly ablaze. With a sense of quiet setting in this is a wonderful time of year to experience less traffic while exploring in the foothills.

Sit down to to a family style meal at the iconic The Esmeralda Inn & Restaraunt. Feel like a drive? Take in one of the many options at one of the eateries in Asheville or more affordably in Rutherfordton (just a half hour away) like Fatz Cafe.
If your heart is set on cooking you can do so in your cabin, or go the easy route with Ingles packing up a holiday meal for pick-up to heat and eat any time of the day. As always plan as far in advance for any option you choose as local restaurants fill up quickly.
