Rob and I have always imagined small groups staying with us. Start-up business outings, reunions, church groups, wedding guests, and birthday parties, etc. We have a great outdoor space for casual social time, but getting together out of the weather, as a group, is a problem.
In typical fashion, Rob designed a small lodge. We priced it, researched the potential to the best of our ability, and were within a phone call of pulling the trigger on getting it built. Thankfully, we stepped back and reconsidered the investment. Would it be worth the cost? How much do we anticipate it being used? Can we even attract anyone who would use it? Having support and general fondness for the idea we decided to look at alternatives to a traditional building. What is novel, cost effective, and year-round functional? A yurt, of course!
Merriam Webster defines a yurt this way:
: a circular domed tent of skins or felt stretched over a collapsible lattice framework and used by pastoral peoples of inner Asia; also : a structure that resembles a yurt usually in size and design.
With many players in the yurt and tent markets there was much to ponder. The amount of options available in a yurt range from features you might expect like windows, to those that compliment the surrounding landscaping like clear, center walls for incorporating existing trees. I was tempted by all the great features many of the companies offered. Ultimately, we settled on Blue Ridge Yurts, a woman-owned company located just a few hours from us. Well engineered to last for years, these yurts are attractive, sturdy, and cost effective. We visited the factory and standing yurts, and were impressed with how sturdy and well made they are. Our 24' modern, heated and cooled yurt is being constructed as I write. Anticipated delivery is the first week of October, 2018. Please bear with us if visiting while we are constructing the foundation (building is a perpetual state that probably won't end during our years of living on the property). We'll keep the mess and noise to a minimum.
