Rainy Days and Mondays. It's All Good In Our Neck of the Woods!

Ah, Karen, you sang it so well! Never has it been more true.
We get it. You've planned the perfect retreat from every day in a quiet little cabin. Hoping for a hot tub, a hike, and dip in the lake. The weather isn't cooperating with rain and possibly thunderstorms in the forecast daily. With us being located in an isothermal belt we are subject to weather patterns a little warmer than what surrounds us, and rain storms can be happening five minutes away while the skies are sunny and cloud dappled at End Of The Road.
Maybe you're only able to get off during weekdays and you're feeling like your missing something big by not being around the area on a weekend. If you are more of a quiet craver weekdays in season can have benefits including discounted rates (excluding holidays) and less traffic going to your selected hot spots.
Instead of it being a bummer, switch it up! One of the amazing gifts of this region of the Blue Ridge Foothills is the diversity in activity within a short drive.
Here's a compilation of the top ten things to do if you're rained out (there are many more, too):
1. Make it a brewery day! Asheville has more micro brewery's than you can shake a stick at. Pick a couple of your fancy ticklers on the Asheville Blog.
2. Okay, don't like beer so make it a wine day! North Carolina has several award winning wines across the state, and this area is no exception. The wineries and offerings seem to increase every year with a varying climate that supports many varietals. Within a half a hour's drive you can experience at least four top-rated wineries. Go a little further and you can hit the Foothills Wine Trail for a day of scenic sniffing and sipping.
3. Explore a gem mine or pan for gems. Locally you can find a "rewarding" gem experience at Chimney Rock Gemstone Mine. Go deeper into the depths by traveling to a functioning gem mine in Little Switzerland called Emerald Village. Either way you'll be in for fun and sparkling rewards during your excursion.
4. Explore the Asheville River Arts District. With representations from almost every artistic discipline Asheville's artists are found in this haven. Meander into each unique gallery and find exactly what you've been looking for on that special wall in your home, or just window shop and take in all the richness of sights and sounds.
5. Suprise the small fry with his/her indoor dream day at KidSenses Museum. Located in the busy main street area of Rutherfordton KidSenses is a hand's on learning museum. This is one arena where kids can touch to their hearts content, and it's encouraged! Plan a birthday party of coordinate your stay with one of the summer camp offerings at this highly rated little kidtopia.
6. Take a dip slide the natural way. What better way to cool off from the humidity than to take a ride down a slippery slope at Sliding Rock. Located about an hour away from EOTR this giant rock slide is fun for youth and adults. Barring a dangerous thunderstorm why not get a little more wet while having a ball? Check the website for important details as this is a managed area. Lightly rainy days may make the parking a little easier in this location.
7. Give new meaning to the words Spa Day at Asheville Salt Cave. Using therapeutic salt water (you know many of its daily uses) and easily locatable in downtown Asheville this is a therapeutic session from heaven. Emerge from a couples massage cleansed and ready for that all important afternoon nap when you arrive back at your cabin! Salt not your thing? There are many other spa options, including the local Irongate Spa downstairs at The Lake Lure Inn and Spa, in the heart of Lake Lure. A personal favorite and splurge well worth the money at least once is the Omni Grove Park Inn's Spa. Oh baby, absolutely fabulous is all we can say about that experience.
8. Antiquing in Landrum, SC. Just over the border in South Carolina is the equestrian community of Landrum. It's sweet main street is home to many shoppes and antique stores. Traipes back through through the neighboring North Carolina community of Tryon, another historic and busy equestrian community as noted by the giant hobby horse that greets you. Search for the beautiful art horses around the area as you travel.
9. Experience the clouds from eye level on the Blue Ridge Parkway Loop Tour. Well known for fall travel the Blue Ridge Parkway is actually beautiful and fun at all times of the year. With pull off sites, small mountain towns and history along the way a car bound day can be relaxing. Be sure to check the Parkway's page for closures and dangerous travel which can occur from storms and the ensuing landslides as well as snow in season.
10. Take a nap and watch a movie! You're on vacation, right? A day doing nothing can be just what the doctor ordered. With Ingles Grocery Store just a few minutes away you can grab your favorite comfort food and one of latest movies at the Redbox located inside the store or at Dollar General.
